I was reading Ellen’s post the other day in which she reflects on where we were this time last year. My word, yes, we are in a different place this time round, and I say that with a slight reluctance because we are facing more and more Covid cases each day. What does this mean for us? Personally, just play it safe guys. That’s the best advice I can offer.
Photographically Autumn and the onset of Winter is a great opportunity for picture taking, for so many reasons. Don’t get me wrong I love summer, as if like me, you’ve discovered kayaking during the lockdown years, that has had Tina and I hooked.
The Basingstoke Canal Canoe sessions - I am in these photos and I hope that in the future to include my own shots taken from on the water. I think that will add a nice angle to this newsletter and my photography.
Photography for awhile took a back-seat. The light is harsh and landscapes, seem to lose something of their veneer as the season progresses. My last two posts have been fun to curate, as autumn is very much here and I love this time of year. It’s those interstitial periods between seasons that do something, they stir some form of deep emotions, maybe the cold air invigorates our creative juices. Any scientists out there who might know, do get in touch.
Some photographic ideas
The clocks go back this weekend coming up, what does that mean for your photography?
Early morning shots are easier, you don’t need to get up at the crack of dawn to venture out!
On the flip side, you finish work, it’s dark outside. That’s annoying isn’t it? No! Have a go at some night photography, we now have more time to explore this at this time of year. Wrap up warm!
Now for some photographic ideas, day and night, autumn and winter…
Night shot of an aircraft coming into land, my local airport, and I do have a spot in mind
Head up to London to capture light trails throughout the city, famous landmarks in the background. Yes, cliched but guaranteed to attract IG likes, if that is your thing (not mine by the way, oh go on then)!
Barren landscapes, bleak skeletal trees with a dramatic moody sky - love those (see example above)
Frosty rivers and canals, such as the one below where the water is very reflective, something more common during the winter than at other times of the year
Are we in for a harsh winter?
Well, I don’t know but this hedgerow is festooned with an abundance of berries!
Join me for a photowalk!
In other news, places and so on
I just call them mushrooms to be honest and there are some houses around the country that are built on similar. We call them “houses on stilts”, though I am not sure if that is the right name for them. It amused us as kids back in the day!
Great to see Slow Ways gaining momentum too.
That’s it for today. Can I keep up the daily edition? The other day I stated that I was in a rut, so something seems to have changed. Less coffee I reckon.
NFT?
I’ve been exploring them and how they could be used for photography, something I need to write a deeper analysis of but in the meantime, here is my first ever…
Ciao!
Love this, Nick! And beautiful photos, as ever. Winter is going to be okay, whatever comes our way ❄
